Description
The Classic Cut series is Macallan’s annual playground for exploring flavor concentration, offering enthusiasts a chance to taste their single malt at a much higher strength than standard releases. While the first few editions focused exclusively on sherry aging, the 2020 Edition breaks the mold. It features a masterfully curated marriage of sherry-seasoned European oak casks and ex-bourbon American oak casks. This specific combination introduces a bright, sweet contrast to the distillery’s signature old-world dried fruit profile.
By bottling the liquid at a commanding 55% ABV (110 proof), Macallan intentionally skips the heavy dilution process. This retains the precious wood oils and charred barrel sugars that create a incredibly dense, mouth-coating texture. The addition of ex-bourbon wood allows a beautiful, creamy vanilla and vibrant citrus brightness to float directly on top of the deeper European oak spice. It is a brilliant, enthusiast-tier bottle designed specifically to show how proof and wood choice can transform classic Speyside malt.

Appearance: Bright, polished sun-gold with thick, oily, and fast-tearing legs.

Aroma: Lively, fresh, and complex. Upfront scents of fresh ginger, orange peel, and vanilla custard are followed by sweet notes of marzipan, gingerbread, and a bright undercurrent of green apple.

Palate: Big, intense, and heavily viscous. The palate is treated to an immediate wave of warming oak spices, freshly grated nutmeg, and ginger. This heat effortlessly gives way to a lush mid-palate of sweet caramel, milk chocolate, and candied orange citrus.

Finish: Long, warm, and highly lingering. The sweet vanilla and fruit characteristics taper off cleanly, leaving a drying finish dominated by fresh oak tannins, thyme, and a final, comforting glow of baking spice.
The Macallan Classic Cut 2020 Edition is a spectacular addition to any serious collector’s cabinet. While it packs a beautiful punch when sipped entirely neat, its high-proof architecture is practically built for customization.
