Description
Willett Family Estate 7 Year Old Bourbon is part of Willett Distillery’s highly collectible single barrel “purple top” program, where each barrel is individually selected and bottled at cask strength with handwritten labels showing barrel number, age, and proof. No two barrels are identical, which makes each release a unique snapshot of Willett’s aging inventory.
At around 7 years of aging in new charred American white oak, this bourbon sits in a transitional maturity zone: old enough to develop real barrel depth, but still young enough to retain bright grain character and high energy. Many 7-year barrels are known for their bold spice, fruit-forward sweetness, and slightly herbal edge, especially compared to older 10–15 year Willett releases.
Across different barrels, the profile commonly shows dark caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and toffee, layered with cherry, plum, and dried fruit. The spice character is usually more pronounced at this age, often presenting as cinnamon, black pepper, clove, and oak char, sometimes with subtle herbal or minty notes. The mouthfeel is typically thick and coating, especially at barrel proof, with a long warming finish.
Recent documented barrels of 7-year Willett bourbon show proof ranges from roughly ~120 proof to 130+ proof, depending on evaporation and warehouse conditions, with some select barrels even exceeding that range.
Because Willett bottles each barrel individually, 7-year releases are often seen as a core entry point into the purple-top lineup—less rare than older age statements but still highly sought after due to their intensity and variability.
