Description
Maker’s Mark 46 was originally created by Bill Samuels, Jr. as the distillery’s first major innovation since opening in 1953. To achieve a deeper, bolder flavor profile without creating a bitter whiskey, he pioneered a unique process: inserting 10 seared French oak staves (specifically “Stave Profile No. 46”) into fully matured Maker’s Mark barrels for a few extra months of cellar aging. While the standard release is proofed down to 94 proof, this rare Cask Strength Limited Edition is pulled straight from the limestone cellar and bottled completely uncut.
Because it retains its natural barrel proof, this expression preserves all the rich wood oils and concentrated sugars that filtration and water normally dilute. The soft red winter wheat in the foundational Maker’s mash bill prevents the high proof from becoming overly harsh, yielding a remarkably creamy, heavy texture. It is a deeply complex, collector-tier dram engineered specifically for enthusiasts who want to experience “46” at its most authentic and intense.

Appearance: Deep, rich copper-bronze with a distinct oily sheen and heavy, slow legs.

Aroma: Strongly aromatic and sweet. A campfire-like sweetness of toasted marshmallow, vanilla bean, and graham cracker is met by sharp bursts of sweet cinnamon, dark cherry, and a heavy backdrop of cedar and French oak.

Palate: Big, punchy, and incredibly viscous. The palate explodes with sweet cinnamon, dark molasses, and dark, dried fruits like raisins and figs. The French oak makes itself known on the mid-palate, introducing rich layers of tobacco leaf, cocoa, and toasted nuts.

Finish: Long, intense, and wonderfully warming. The fruitiness tapers off into a satisfyingly dry finale dominated by charred oak tannins, lingering baking spices, and a final hint of sweet honey.
