Description
Introduced in 2010, Maker’s Mark 46 represents the first major change to the distillery’s recipe since its founding in 1953. Created by Bill Samuels, Jr. near his retirement, the goal wasn’t to replace the iconic wheated bourbon, but to amplify its flavors into something bolder and more complex. To achieve this without making the whiskey bitter, the distillery pioneered a unique “stave finishing” process in collaboration with Independent Stave Company.
The magic happens after standard Maker’s Mark is fully aged. The whiskey is dumped from its barrel, and 10 seared virgin French oak staves (specifically designated as “Stave Profile No. 46”) are secured inside the empty cask. The bourbon is returned to the barrel and rested inside a subterranean limestone cellar. The constant cool temperature slows down the aging process, allowing the liquid to pull deep, rich wood sugars and spices from the French oak without absorbing the harsh, bitter tannins usually caused by summer heat.

Appearance: Rich, deep amber with vibrant copper-bronze highlights.

Aroma: Strongly aromatic and sweet. Heavy notes of creamy vanilla, rich toffee, and toasted oak are balanced by a prominent bouquet of warm baking spices—notably nutmeg, clove, and fresh cinnamon.

Palate: Creamy, full-bodied, and remarkably smooth. The palate is treated to an upfront rush of caramel, vanilla custard, and apple peel. The French oak influence quickly takes over on the mid-palate, introducing deep layers of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and a robust wave of baking spice.

Finish: Long, warming, and satisfyingly dry. The rich sweetness tapers off gracefully, leaving behind a lingering finish of charred wood tannins, wood spice, and a soft hint of honey.
Bottled at a sturdy 94 proof (compared to the standard 90 proof), Maker’s Mark 46 possesses an elevated structure that makes it an exceptional sipping whiskey. It is deeply rewarding when enjoyed entirely neat or over a large cube of ice, and its bold spice profile makes it a spectacular secret weapon for upgrading a classic Old Fashioned or Manhattan.
