First hitting the shelves in 1958, Maker’s Mark was created by Bill Samuels, Sr. with a single, radical goal: to craft a bourbon that was deeply flavorful but never burned or bit on the finish. To achieve this, he famously burned his family’s 170-year-old rye-heavy recipe and invented a brand new mash bill. He substituted the traditional rye grain with soft red winter wheat (70% corn, 16% soft red winter wheat, 14% malted barley). This single decision birthed the “wheated bourbon” category, shifting the flavor profile away from sharp pepper toward a gentler, confectionery sweetness.
To this day, Maker’s Mark is handcrafted at their beautiful distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, using remarkably traditional methods. The distillery utilizes a historic, heirloom yeast strain that is over a century old, cooks its grain in antique copper stills, and rotates every single barrel by hand through the warehouses to ensure perfectly even aging. Bottled at an approachable 90 proof, every single bottle is still individually hand-dipped into signature 400-degree red plastic wax—meaning no two bottles on a shelf are ever exactly alike.
