The Macallan 18 Year Old Double Cask represents a masterclass in wood management and flavor equilibrium. While traditional Macallan whiskies owe their reputation entirely to European oak, the Double Cask collection introduces American white oak into the legacy. The process is incredibly intensive: Macallan sources raw American oak from the forests of Ohio and Kentucky, ships it to Spain to be handcrafted into barrels, and seasons them with fine Oloroso sherry in Jerez alongside traditional European oak casks.
Both styles of wood spend a minimum of 18 years aging Macallan’s signature, oily new-make spirit before they are married together. The American oak softens the whisky, injecting prominent, creamy notes of vanilla custard, butterscotch, and fresh orchard fruits. Meanwhile, the European oak acts as the structural anchor, providing subtle wood tannins, rich dried fruits, and a robust backbone of backing spices. Bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) with zero added caramel coloring, it is a extraordinarily rounded single malt that reveals a brighter, sweeter side of mature Speyside whisky.
