Old Forester 1870 Original Batch is the foundational expression in the distillery’s celebrated Whiskey Row Series. In 1870, founder George Garvin Brown revolutionized the whiskey industry by becoming the first to batch and sell bourbon exclusively in sealed glass bottles to guarantee quality. Because he did not own a single distillery at the time, he created his profile by purchasing barrels from three separate distilleries and blending them together.
To recreate that historic “Original Batch” flavor profile, Old Forester selects barrels from three different warehouses, each possessing unique microclimates and flavor characteristics. These barrels are small-batched and minimally filtered before being bottled at a historic 90 proof. The result is a lighter, highly sophisticated, and incredibly approachable bourbon that highlights the softer, sweeter side of Old Forester’s signature mash bill.

Aroma: Soft, floral, and deeply fruity. Bright aromas of fresh orange zest, sweet clove, and shortbread are complemented by a delicate layer of raw honey and dried ginger.

Palate: Light-to-medium-bodied and remarkably gentle on the tongue. Gentle flavors of baking spices, sweet vanilla, and brown sugar give way to a vibrant mid-palate of bright citrus, dark berries, and a soft touch of toasted oak.

Finish: Clean, crisp, and effervescent. The sweetness fades into a dry, lingering finish marked by a pleasant herbal rye tingle, light wood tannins, and a hint of white pepper.
