During the 1970s and 1980s, Michter’s Original Sour Mash Whiskey was the distillery’s absolute most popular release, capturing the hearts of whiskey drinkers across the country. After the brand’s historic relocation to Kentucky, Michter’s resurrected this legendary profile for their US-1 lineup. Rather than following strict legal guidelines for a single grain classification like straight bourbon or straight rye, Michter’s Sour Mash utilizes a carefully guarded, unique mash bill that sits right in the golden middle—giving you the rich, sweet body of a bourbon alongside the vibrant spice of a rye.
True to its name, this whiskey utilizes a “sour mash” fermentation process, where a portion of the previously fermented spent mash is introduced into the new batch to ensure a beautifully consistent flavor profile. Aged in fire-charred new American white oak and bottled at an approachable 86 proof, it delivers a remarkably elegant, easy-drinking experience.
