While standard federal laws dictate that straight bourbon must be aged in charred new American oak barrels (Quercus alba), the Old Charter Oak collection explores the magnificent flavor differences that occur when bourbon is introduced to entirely different species of oak trees from around the globe.
For this highly coveted, limited-availability release, the distillery sourced new oak barrels crafted from trees grown inside the historic, tightly managed forests of France. French oak (Quercus robur) is globally celebrated in fine winemaking for its tight grain structure, which forces the resting spirit to interact much more slowly and deeply with the wood fibers over time.
The mash bill utilizes Buffalo Trace’s acclaimed, low-rye Mash Bill #1—the same premium foundation found in Eagle Rare and E.H. Taylor. By allowing this classic Kentucky distillate to mature inside French oak, the typical heavy caramel and aggressive barrel char notes of American wood are replaced by a softer, highly silky, and complex continental elegance. Bottled at a carefully selected 46% ABV (92 Proof) and presented with a distinct purple label alongside a textured wood medallion, this bottle acts as a high-margin centerpiece that draws tremendous search curiosity and enthusiast conversion on digital shelves.
